When comparing recordings produced in small project studios to commercial "major label" CD releases, the sometimes stark contrast in audio quality is often due to inadequate mastering. Sadly, this is one of the most overlooked aspects of the recording process - even though it remains a crucial step in achieving the best possible sound. Audio
Mastering* is the last creative step in producing a
"radio-ready" recording. It involves the process of optimizing
all aspects of a recording - equalization, leveling, dynamics processing
and - if necessary - noise reduction. Mastering can significantly
enhance the audio in profound ways, such as helping the lead vocal to
stand out or by taming a muddy or overly "boomy" bass. |

aspect of the production process seriously, having over 15 years of

Dithering: Apogee UV-22 or POW-r 1/2/3* Strictly speaking, this activity is more accurately referred to as "pre-mastering" - with the "mastering" process referring to the fabrication of a "glass master" by a compact-disc manufacturing facility. However, since most people are unaware of the distinction, we're happy to use the term "mastering" in the above context, even though we realize it is a misnomer.
